Day 03 – Sirgiriya Rock Fortress

After an early breakfast travel to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, known by the locals as the ‘Eighth wonder of the world’. Afterwards visit a Batik Factory where you can experience the manufacture of this beautiful traditional art form of making Batik prints.

Sigiriya is home to the 5th Century ‘Fortress in the Sky’ which is undoubtedly the most fantastic single wonder of Sri Lanka. Locals in the area also refer to it as the ‘Lion Rock’ because of the huge lion that use to stand at the entrance to the fortress. Today sadly only its giant paws remain. Within its triple-moat defense system, the huge rock rises to a sheer height of 500ft. On its summit are the foundations of what was once King Kashyapa’s great and sumptuous palace and gardens complete with swimming pool and cooling systems. On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of Sinhala secular painting survived in the form of frescoes of life sized damsels in all the freshness and delicacy of their original color. It is important to state that Sigiriya was never conquered by any of the invading forces that had such an effect on the island of Sri Lanka. It was however, abandoned by the British during the colonial rule which further added to the citadel’s neglect and deterioration. In the afternoon enjoy an elephant back safari tour in Habarana.

It is considered Sri Lanka’s most prized possession and every year in offering to the gods for blessings and prosperity, the tooth is paraded in the back of the Royal Elephant of the country in the grand Kandyian Perahera Pageantry.Thereafter proceed to Nuwara Eliya, visiting a tea estate and a factory en route.

Nuwara Eliya known as ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka is set against beautiful backdrops of the well carpeted Tea estate plantations, mountains, valleys, and waterfalls. It is supposed to be one of the coldest places on the island, but is really just like an England spring day with temperatures dropping to as low as 5 degrees at night during certain times of the year. All around Nuwara Eliya you will see evidence of the British influence. Houses are like country cottages or Queen Ann style mansions. The Nuwara Eliya town is today a busy trade town with all the hustle and bustle of one of the major cities.

With many water holes inside the park visitors can experience the wild unfolding before their very eyes as the animals and birds are drawn to them towards the late evening or early mornings. There are thousands of Flamingoes, Assemblies of spotted Billed Pelicans, Spoonbills, Cormorants and various species of Herons. Pheasants, Pea Fowl, Peacocks and the Wild Fowl are found in hundreds. Galle is also Sri Lanka’s 3rd largest city. Today the 90 acre Galle Fort shows no evidence of their Portuguese founders. The Dutch incorporated the Portuguese northern wall in a great rampart in 1663. A second, taller wall was build inside of it. Between the two walls, a covered passage connected the central bastion with the fort’s two half bastion’s overlooking the sea. The Dutch also installed a sophisticated drainage system, complete with brick-lined underground sewers that were flushed twice a day by the rides. The original gate to the fort was by the harbor. It is still there, marked by the old Dutch V.O.C (for ‘Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie) armed with a rooster crest.

What our Explorers have to say about us

t1

"We had an amazing vacation in Sri Lanka, with Chandi as our personal guide throughout. Chandi was very courteous and well informed on not just the history of the island, but also really interesting facts, which he shared with us. He even joined our crew on the white water rafting! Great fun and lots of laughter.... we'd love to visit again."

MICHELLE PARGINOU

"Earlier this month we spent 11 days in Sri Lanka on our own private tour arranged through Ranfer Travels. It was definitely the easiest way to do things, as Mr Chandana arranged everything for us before the trip, from itinerary to accommodation and transport. Our guide for the whole trip was Mr Udesh, who was so knowledgeable about everything in Sri Lanka. This includes the ancient history, the culture, the religion, agriculture, foods, sports - everything! He was more than happy to share his knowledge with us, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the trip. We crammed a lot into our trip, and it simply wouldn't have been possible to do or see as much, if it wasn't for the help of Ranfer travels. So if you're thinking of doing a tour in Sri Lanka, I would really recommend speaking to Ranfer Travels!. "
