Mini Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour
This 4 day Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour in Sri Lanka is perfectly design for those who want to get a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s steep history and affiliation to Buddhism. Needless to say, Sri Lanka boasts some of the world’s best preserved Buddhist sites and monuments. Touring these prominent Buddhist sites and monuments gives any pilgrim a chance to discover and learning about the steep religious history of Sri Lanka. Extend your stay to observe religious rights and meditation at some selected centers.
Day 01
On arrival our Target Travels representative will meet and greet you at Colombo International Airport. Travel to Kandy and visit the Daladha Maligawa popularly known as the Temple of the Tooth, en route visit the Gadaladeniya Temple.
Gadaladeniya Temple is perched on a beautiful hilltop setting, built on a colossal rock, 1 km from the main Kandy Colombo road. Built of stone, showing influence of Indian temple architecture, it has lacquered doors, carvings and frescoes and a moonstone at the entrance of the shine. The inscriptions on the rock by Dharmakirti date it to 1344. The Principal gilded image of the Buddha (18th century, which replaced the original destroyed by the Portuguese) framed by elaborate makara decoration.
The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa) is one of the most renovated Buddhist pilgrimage sites of the world. (Note: All devotees wishing to enter the Chambers of the Tooth Temple must wear pure white cloths to enter this restricted area. Please note that attire must be respectful and for more information please contact your Target Travels representative)
Visit Matale Aluvihare (Aluwihare), which has the renovated ruins of ancient shrines carved out of huge boulders. In the first and second century BC, the site was associated with King Vattagamini Abhaya (103-77BC). The Mahavansa (Buddhist Chronicle of the island) was inscribed here in Pali. Visitors to the temple today can enjoy a demonstration of how the ancient Palmyra palm strips was prepared.
Proceed to Dambulla and visit the renowned Dambulla Cave Temples. Dambulla Cave Temple is a monastery gracefully hidden between the caves of this beautiful rock forest. It is the finest and most famous of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist cave temples stands 150m outside modern Dambulla; within five large caverns are dozens of centuries-old sitting, standing and reclining Buddha images and Hindu deities. The temples were reputedly created by Valagam Bahu (104-76BC), King of Anuradhapura, who took refuge here after being driven from his throne by South Indian Invaders.
Dinner and overnight stay at SIGIRIYA REST or similar
Day 02
After breakfast leave for Polonnaruwa via Sigiriya. Visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site. The top of the rock has a surface area of 1.5 hectare and is undoubtedly a ‘must-see’ if you are ever in the area.
Lunch (Lunch box/parcel provided) After lunch proceed to engage in all Buddhist religious sites in Polonnaruwa, the 2nd capital of ancient Lanka. Free for your religious activities.
Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Sudu Araliya or similar.
Day 03
After breakfast travel to explore the many places of interests in Anuradhapura. Visit all the main Buddhist religious places in Anuradhapura and a city tour of Anuradhapura.
Evening Free for your religious activities.
Lunch (Lunch box/parcel provided).
Overnight Stay at Hotel Dulyana, Anuradhapura or similar.
Day 04
After breakfast travel to Colombo International Airport for your onward journey. If time permits en-route visit the Elephant Orphanage.
PINNAWALA ELEPHANT ORPHANGE was initially established in 1972 and was relocated to its present site in 1975. Situated on route to Kandy, is built on an extent of 25-acres, on an old coconut plantation on the banks of the Maha Oya river. The orphanage was initially created to house the many orphaned elephants that are found in the wild, as young elephants left alone in the jungle without the proper care and survival skills invariably die. This orphanage is now home to almost 84 elephants with the number increasing regularly.
Proceed to Airport for Departure (Departure flight should be scheduled for the evening)
