MODERN DAY SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka is a parliamentary democracy with an elected president and freely contested elections. Sri Lankans enjoy a long life expectancy, a high literacy rate that belies its attractive per capita income, and one of the most advanced health system in Asia. Over the last 50 years the island has continued to see rapid economic and social change. Our legendary ‘Ceylon Tea’ plantation economy remains important though no longer as dominate as it was during the mid-50s period, while newer industries, including Sri Lanka tourism, have taken on the prime role.
In the early port-independence years, Sri Lanka was regarded as a ‘model colony’. The country started on a strong economic footing with a strong sterling balance and little internal division. Within the new constitution there was also a commitment to religious neutrality. Both the island’s main languages, Sinhala and Tamil, has been declared national languages and equality access to political and administrative positions was guaranteed.
Despite all efforts to maintain equality and stability, the island was pledge with a 3 decade long war, where the Tamil Tigers terrorized the common citizens of the island held the government of Sri Lanka ransom to many of the island’s development strategies. By May 2009 the LTTE were hemmed in, and they surrendered which bought much awaited peace to the country for all its citizens concerned.
Today Sri Lanka is one of the safest and stable countries to visit in the world. Visitors can get about with ease and most industries including Sri Lanka’s tourism industry in seeing steady growth with immense potential for the future. The new found peace to the island has bought hope and optimism to Sri Lanka, and yet there remains a lot to be done to rebuild this great nation. The east and north are still struggling to recover from the damage inflicted by the war years and also by the tsunami. People almost all have returned to their homes, and showing great resilience in the economy.
However, modern day Sri Lanka doesn’t seem to stop for any of these huddles thrown at them. The youth is hungry and is spearheading this thriving economy to the future. Foreign investment is booming like never before with a promising growth in the real estate sector. The government has made all efforts to invest heavily on the country infrastructure with future industrial and economic development. Rural areas are developed at a rapid pace forcing private invested to promote growth in the regions increasing the employment opportunities for rural people.
There has never been a better time to visit Sri Lanka. The island is still untapped and non-commercialized of touristic development and visitors can enjoy a truly local experience when traveling the length and breath of the island. Visitors can indulge in the countries range of local food delicacies and mingle with the various festival celebrations truth out the island.
