Buduruvagala is one of the most important places for Mahayana Buddhist as this contains several religious statues. During the 8th and 9th centuries, Mahayanism had spread to all parts of the country and at Buduruvagala are the remains of the Mahayana Bodhisathva’s worship at the time. The central figure is a Buddha statue carved in high-relief (Bas-relief), 51 ft. in height – the tallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka.
Legend has it that the statues at Buduruvagala were carved by a pupil of the master stone mason responsible for the Aukana Buddha statue.
