ARUGAM BAY
South into Ampara District is Arugam Bay, a stunning, secluded little resort set in something of a cul-de-sac that runs back from the beach. It was largely wiped out on December 26, 2004, but the rebuilding process has been conducted quickly and sensitively. Guesthouse owners are desperately keen to remind travellers that this is top-drawer surfing territory.
Arugam has a tradition of offering high-quality accommodation at reasonable prices and those who live and work here are proud of its reputation as a favourite among independent travellers. Local hoteliers are well organised and are desĀperate to maintain Arugam’s unspoilt vibe. With its mellow full-moon parties and fantastic location for discovering the delights of nearby nature parks Arugam offers a tantalising glimpse of what vast swathes ofSri Lanka’s East Coast could be like.
As a surfing destination, Arugam is second to none. Its the place to hit the waves if your a surfer and a great place to start if your not. Surfers from all over the world are lured to this magical piece of ‘green room’ heaven.
