Hindu Temples
  • Jaffna's Nallur Kandaswamy Temple is the finest Hindy temple in Sri Lanka and rivals the great temples of Tamil Nadu in India. It is lso home to the Nallur Festival, which runs every summer for a month.

  • One of the most important Siva temples on the island, Munnesvaram Temple was, as legend has it, visited by Vishnu himself. Like many Hindu temples, it was rebuilt during the British era after the Portuguese had destroyed the original.

  • Of the many small Hindu temples is Colombo's Pettah district, the candy-striped Kathiresan Kovil is the most important and the starting point for the annual Vel Festival.

  • Home to all of the island's faiths and an extravagant summer festival, Kataragama has a large religious complex and perfectly illustrates the religious overlapping that takes place on the island, as its visited by the Buddhists, Hindu's and Muslim's of Sri Lanka.

  • The Jaffna peninsula is dotted with Hindu temples. Naguleswaram and Maviddapuram near the northern edge, are two of the grandest and have withstood years of damage due to the civil war.
